We figured with Nebraska’s move to the Big10, it might be time for a little overhaul.

The old site layout had been in existence since 2005, and was a bit stale. Hopefully, you’ll find things a little bit easier to read – and find. The current season’s football schedule will always have a place in the main navigation, with the ability to see past seasons results in its own place as well. We’ll be back filling results as we get time, but they currently go back to 2008.

The archive page got a bit jumbled in the move from the test server to the live server, so I’ll be cleaning that up shortly. And I’ll squashing any other bugs that come up in the next few days. Web site bugs always give me a headache, but relief comes from any online Canadian pharmacy.

We also have four open ad slots. So if you want to help out Huskerzone.com on the financial side and get some nice exposure from traffic, feel free to hit us up. $150/year for a 125×125 square banner ad. We’re also more than happy to entertain any other ad opportunities you may have. More information on the Advertising Section.

I hope you like it.

That’s why there’s Twitter.

If you’re a Big Red fan hungry for constant updates on the best athletic program in America, you’re in luck. There are currently two Twitter aggregators on the market dedicated exclusively to Huskers updates. HuskerFever.com is an adjunct service from HuskerZone, the other is part of a tech startup called Social Approach.

Both are a great way to stay up to the minute and if you’re a Twitter user, the two sites also serve as a discovery engine for people on Twitter to follow.

BTW, Mizzou’s QB is on Twitter and he’s calling for Tiger fans to jingle their keys tomorrow night.

Lincoln’s Craigslist doesn’t see the kind of action Craig garners in a big city. For instance, under Writing Gigs, there are only three.

Here’s one:

Sports network is seeking fans to cover their beloved Huskers. Playerpress.com is the platform for your opinions to be heard by millions. Compensation is available after brief trial period. No exp needed. Please include short writing sample with response.

We ran some ads looking for contributors on Craig’s site and in the Daily Nebraskan a couple of years ago. We had a decent response to the Daily Nebraskan ad, but never closed the deal. One of the things we learned from that particular episode is college students aren’t blogging, rather they’re sharing content on Facebook and MySpace. Yet, I still believe there are future sports writers and photogs on the ground in Lincoln right now who would gladly cover Nebraska athletics for us for free. Why? Because in order to get a job as a sports writer, you need a great tear sheet and a good reputation.

Of course, you can earn that by building your own site. If you have the time. The skills. The aptitude, the money and the perseverance to see it through.

One can also go the college paper route. I did! But there was no such thing as the internet in my mid-1980s day. If I was in school today, I’d develop my own site(s) and submit writing to other sites.

If you (or someone you know) wants to write about the Huskers and provide front line reporting from the campus in Lincoln we’d like to hear from you.

You can develop a voice on Huskerzone and perhaps say some things you could or would not say in a more formal media setting.

Come on, let’s see what you’ve got.

Thursday, May 22 was a dark day for Husker hoop fans. This was the day the Big 12 conference denied entrance to the highly touted basketball recruit, Roburt Sallie. Although the day will be remembered, the saga started in the fall of 2006.

Roburt Sallie committed to Washington out of high school but failed to meet academic requirements. He enrolled at prep school and after a year, committed to NU to play in 2006/07. The NCAA denied him entrance after Sallie could not produce any homework from his year at prep school. Sallie had provided test scores and transcripts, but after 3 appeals he was still denied. Here is what cost NU a shot at possibly the best player they have ever signed. Sallie, while waiting for the appeal from the NCAA in 2006, enrolled ( or someone else did on his behalf ) in NU, paying his own way. This was in violation of Big 12 conference rule 6.2 which reads in part ”any student-athlete who enrolls at a conference institution, part time or full time, must meet NCAA initial eligibility requirements”. Since the NCAA hadn’t cleared Sallie, he was in violation of this rule. Nebraska asked for a waiver from the Big 12 Board, comprised of faculty athletic representatives. A University would have to show extraordinary circumstances in order to receive a waiver, and the conference didn’t feel it was justified.

[Courtesy of Lincoln Journal Star]

I am just appaled that the Big 12 conference wouldn’t consider this an ”extraordinary circumstance” since Sallie was getting the runaround from the NCAA in 2006. I am writing a strongly worded response to the Big 12 and if you would like to do that, you can click here. What on EARTH was the Big 12 thinking? Roburt Sallie would’ve run through a brick wall to come to NU and they deny him because of 3 DAYS? This man has gotten the run around since 2006 and this panel had the opportunity to right the wrong and for whatever reason, they chose not to. Do they want this player in some other conference? Roburt Sallie is the the type of player the Big 12 needs. In every interview he ever did about NU, it wasn’t about “I” or “ME” but it was about NU as a school, a team, a family. What is with the Big 12? NU made the Big 12 from 1996-2001, but as of late, the conference has been a HEAVY south conference favorite. What if Texas needed this waiver? NU gets no respect from the Big 12 in my opinion. I say we leave this conference and go somewhere else. They can change the name of the conference to THE OTHER 11. WHO’S WITH ME?

According to Sean Callahan of HuskersIllustrated.com, an unconfirmed rumor has circulated on Orangebloods.com about who the next Strength and Conditioning coach will be at Nebraska. James Dobson will be hired away from Iowa where he currently is an assistant S&C coach.

Anything is considered an upgrade from someone who makes 330 pound lineman run 5 miles for conditioning, but I was holding out hope, beings we are dippin’ in the past success category, that Boyd Eppley would take the reins one more time. From what I have read on this guy, he does sound like a good choice. I am pleased with the youth movement on this staff and am excited to finally see them in action.

The Panthers are just 4-7 this season heading into Saturday’s annual “Backyard Brawl” game against West Virginia.

Despite compiling a 15-19 record in his tenure at his alma mater, Wannstedt has the support of newly-hired athletic director Steve Pederson, who served as the university’s athletic director for just over six years before a five-year stint in the same capacity at Nebraska.

“My relationship with Dave dates back to my initial arrival at Pitt 11 years ago,” Pederson said. “I know that he is passionately committed to the University of Pittsburgh and its football program. We are going to work very hard to do everything we can to help him and our program achieve at the highest levels.”

Does this sound familiar to anyone? I don’t understand this guy’s affinity to losing coaches with NFL experience. To the people of Pittsburgh, we have case loads of Pedi-Shine left. Trust me, you will need it.
