It wasn’t pretty, but we got the win. And it was a win we desperately needed at home, in Big 12 conference play. Once upon a time, the outcome of this game would have been a foregone conclusion. Not so, today. College football is changing fast.

It was a tale of two half’s. Act one- NU takes the field and plays inconsistently on both sides of the ball moreso on the defensive side of the ball. We had a blown coverage in every series of the first half and two on Baylor’s last score of the half and the game as it turned out. It was the normal culprits Assante, O’hanlon. Thenarse and Culbertwere not innocent as they both entered and exited shortly thereafter and it wasn’t to congratulate them on good work. I am now convinced that for as talented as those two are they are either stupid or retarded because each week they don’t put effort into learning the system they are wasting Talent and letting down there team as well. Assante and O’hanlon are the best we got at this time and to their credit each made plays in the end to help this team. Back to the first half the refs are really jobbing this team consistently they called some no brainers against us one being the late hitbut were was the face mask by Glen I watched the North stadium screen two times and saw a tackle by grabbing the jersey on the shoulder pad. They missed A Baylor block in the back, Facemask Defensive Hold and this was the first half. The Offense left points on the field and just did not look to be in sync as they were the last two weeks. The Wildcat, five wide sets three TE sets did not show up. The loss of Holt hindered this but what about mendoza, Brooks and CG. We did not have that dynamic feel in the first half as we sputtered and spurted. Baylor may have been winning HALF or ACT one but it was only because we were beating ourselves. Not to take a thing away from Griffin he is Electric. He is not much of a passer though and I kept wondering as Recievers flew down the field wide open against our zone schemes why not man up and funnel griffin back to the middle as opposed to zone and give him the outside. Baylor outgained us in half one 234 to I believe 202. I was not worried yet because we could fix all things that were killing us. Half Two The Defense after a blown coverage in series one holds the Bears to 116 yds and 0 points and getting a saftey in the process. On one series they held Baylor twice on third down in the same drive. This would be the Roughing the Kicher Drive and Henry was close to getting the ball and Really was just hustling and couldn’t change course. Baylor was 0-10 on third down And Nu was 11-17. If you get them off the field as we did especially in the 2nd half and your offense is converting 60%+ You stay on the field and they stay off. The adjustmens which seem to be a commitment to contain the end and cositenlty switching spys kept Griffin in check in half two. The defense got better a good sign for upcoming weeks in game changes that worked. We may have lost Dillard for a couple of weeks with an ankle injury but X-rays were negative. The Holt injury i am not sure of but he was hobbling along the sidelines in pads in half one. In the last part of the 3rd quarter and the 4th the offense put ogether two important drives to close the door on Baylor as Joe Ganz did not throw an int for the second game. NU outyarded Baylor 497-350 as we won 32-20.
We have got to win ther TO battle to beat OU.
I can not believewhat I am about to say but Marlon Lucky has done a good job the last two weeks and I hope he will keep this up against OU because he can be a good weapon down in Norman. Q lost another fumble which is after a week in which he had a coming out party and just as fast he came right back in. Helu did not get the touches or the right plays called for him So I could not say if hed did fair or poor. SU is starting to be the force i hoped he would be he is splitting doubles and just keeps his motor going all game long. Thw whole D-line is doing well. Anybody know why Mike Smith got the majority of snaps ahead of Javario Burkes. I figured TV analyst may have had the scoop as the PA guy doesn’t give you that angle. GO Barney Cotton after a 4th and 1 when we couldn’t go 3 ft on a qb sneak Barney Cotton threw and stomped his hat at least three times before politely letting the line no that at NU we take 3ft when we want. Kudos to you bud hopefully these guys take that to heart. I was hoping maybe you could flip a bench or a water cooler . (better effect)
@Brad hey man how about apiece on Swift and his record.(passing the Jet)? Go Huskers

I was really disappointed to hear Bo Pelini yelling at Tyler Wortman, calling him an F-ing moron. OK first of all I don’t like a coach who belittles his players and secondly, Wortman has one B to the rest of his A’s for his entire college career. He would hardly classify as a moron. When someone sees a head coach, especially one that is thinking about playing for the Huskers, it doesn’t do us any favors to have him all up in his players grills and insulting them.

@HuskerBrad
I saw Bo pull Tyler toward him, but missed the rest what is the low down?

Tyler is a big boy, I’m sure Bo didn’t mean to make him cry.

I know, but I am sure he makes up for it with plenty of praise.
@red
Wortman was calling the defense when Dillard went down and glenn was out. He didn’t make the right call and Pelini had to burn a timeout. The announcers said Pelini is getting after his player, you picked up audio of him calling Wortman a F—ing Moron. Now I know he is a big kid and all, but he could’ve said pull your head out of your A$$ or something to that effect.

@Brad
Maybe that motivates a smart guy who takes pride in his GPA. You are right he should have done it different, and after TO we were used to a different philosphy in ways to motivate but Charlie Mcbride used to get after the defense just ask some of his former players. It sounds good to use reverse psychology to motivate Wortman in a sense like touching a hot burner you only have to be that stupid once and for the majority of us that is all it takes.

I know what you are saying, but it just seems…..well “Bush” league.

@Brad
I agree with you man it kinda takes something away form the pedastal I perched Bo on.
October 26th, 2008 at 7:30 pm
@Brad what was the issue with Javario’s reduced snaps?

I’m guessing that Bo probably uses that language all the time - whether right or wrong is up to you - and am guessing his players are used to it. I’m not saying it looks good on national TV or anything, just sort of the way it is. Let’s not forget; this is a learning process for Bo as well, I think his sideline actions will probably mellow over time. I don’t think he will, but he’ll learn how to better handle things.
