I was happy to see fewer penalties. Great job defense! Think Ganz looked very good. And what would we do without Nate Swift? Didn’t like the fumbles. Think things are looking up and the team is coming together each week.
BTW, I agree the Brooke Shields VW commercials were funny - they certainly are better than University commercials on FSN:) Good play coverage by you guys!
Everything was really solid I thought. The O line looked good, Ganz was as a stud again, Lucky looked fantastic - and I’m in the Helu camp btw - the Defense was pretty solid for the most part, no stupid penalties, Watson called a great game. Just a fantastic job of preperation and execution, keep it up Bo. The fumbles were an issue, but I give credit where credit is due, ISU was tackling and hitting hard and forced most of the drops.
I was watching NU v ISU on my cousin’s main tv and on the little tv to the right TT v TAMU was playing out as well. NU, which had lost its third straight game at TT, after a rough first offensive series in which it fumbled three times and lost one dominated ISU convincingly in the first half. A fourth fumble as we were driving to end the half by Menelik Holt was an odd but matching bookend to a half which we looked as if we had won three in a row, not coming in on a three game skid. TT coming in number 5 in the nation to what is the worst big 12 school this season TAMU was being handled early on both sides of the ball. You would never know they were 6-0 coming into this game. They look flat on offense and TAMU is moving the ball well on a Defense that looks alot like former TT defenses as oppsosed to the D of early this year. Is it not funny how one game where a team lets a big win slip away actually has an oppositte effect on the two teams in terms of momentum and confidence. TT looks like it lost to us last saturday, they do end up putting away the Aggies at kyle field but that team that put away KST on the road doesn’t seem to have that swagger they came into the game against BIG RED with. We struggled early in the third quarter to establish our selves offensivley and i believe we kind of shelled up with that first half cushion and were playing not to lose our fourth game in a row as opposed to winning our first road contest since Wake Forest last year. The defense gave up a big run on ISU’s second play of the 2nd half that covered 67 yards and 6 points, but after that kept our lead in tach. They gave up 105 yds rushing and 113 passing for the game against a struggling Cyclone offense. They also had two take aways the first since NMSU. The offense did get back on track but not because of the dynamic that made it so blanced in the first half. moreso because of two fumbles and a missed scoring apportunity by ISU that seemed to deflate the entire Cyclone sideline. The NU offense in the first half had so many sets and schemes. We saw wildcat. 5 wides, snugs, two and three TE’s, 3 wide I, Tight I, shotgun in all various forms. we ran zone reads, options, seams slants direct snaps and were out of this world effective. We were being called a spread team by the versus crew but I believe with all theses sets and personnel groupings this is a hybrid of the west coast, spread, prostyle run balnced offenses all in one. I just wish we would of kept the foot on the jugular and squeezed the life out of ISU by our own means. Lucky looked brilliant and hit holes harder than i have ever seen him hit holes and the way he followed the blocks on that option were impressive. I will not take back my five star bust feelings with this guy until he does this the rest of the season and sprks us when we need a spark. Roy if you had another gear you would of hit 125 yds on the ground easy. looked good again maybe his strength is not true break away speed but the ability to move as fast laterally as he does straight ahead. And Quentin if he doesn’t fumble looks as fast as he does strong. that td run were he hit the crease was as impressive as when he cracked the db earlier. We cut the penalities (4-45) and the O-line is getting better. I f we don’t get conservative until we need to and they keep moving forward and growing into their coaches identity this team will be playing in December and maybe not at the Bag and Save warehouse discounts bowl in Yankton SD. All it takes sometimes is one game for a team to realize they can play with anybody on any given saturday. Maybe these coaches got these kids to believe with the way they attacked the red raiders in Lubbock, maybe that quot from white men can’t jump does hold merrit. sometimes when you win you really lose and when you lose you really win. Now put your mouth where your money is?
Hold on folks, it was Iowa State. They beat a cupcake that they should have. Next week should be the same. Then we’ll see if this team has grown up or turned the corner…
I think if you listen to Shawn Watson, it has to do with making the offense more of a spread offense. I really liked that they brought in Marcus Mendoza for a quick pass. I think that shows the direction we are going with. We are trying to get some speed on the field. You can see that with Niles Paul playing more in passing downs and not just in running downs. Although, someone better tell Niles that this isn’t high school and he needs to protect the ball better. He really lets that ball move around quite a bit while he is running.
On huskers illustrated last week, they had an article dedicated to Larry Assante. It talked about how he h as finally turned the corner and that you could see that in the TT game.
OK, let me first say I am a Larry Assante fan….well if he is playing linebacker. First of all Huskers Illustrated, did you see Larry Assante reading up on Safety for Dummies while Michael Crabtree was sitting in the wide open waiting for the ball on 4th and 4? And secondly, did you see the potential of 2 interceptions GO RIGHT BY ASSANTE? On the first one, he had deep coverage with Armando M. The ball was badly thrown and way underthrown. Assante ran right to the receiver and actually got turned around, losing the ball in the air. THIS is OUR SAFETY? On the second, he was behind the receiver in the end zone and the ball went RIGHT through his hands. C’MON man. This makes about 5 INT’s I can think of off the top of my head that he should have gotten. I am not a big fan of his as a safety and the 1st INT possibility proved that to me once again.
As for Husker Illustrated, maybe you should run the Assante to LB thread and see if it picks up steam.
@Ed ya it was a cupcake and we did what we were supposed to my point exactly. Thank you for veifying that for us all. I am guessing last week it was just TT and next week it will be Baylor. In case you have not looked at the big twelve landscape each team can rise up and give you a run on any given Saturday which makes winning the ones we were supposed to even more impressive. This team could have fell behind 21-0 as Kansas did in their Ames stop. We are a few plays away from 6-1. And this team didn’t just win they dominated this is in year one of this system. We could have rolled over like we did last year but they didn’t. With the same young men who after the last regime had more guit than fight. We don’t have to wait until two weeks down the road to see if they turned the corner because if you look at were we are and how we responded in similiar situations to last year so in the respect of losing a close game we were supposed to lose to and then playing the following week at a team we were supposed to beat 0-2 in those situations last year 1-0 this year we may not have made all the turns we need to make before we are back on top. Yet you can not get around the block unless you make three turns. So turn one accomplished next up beat a team in the top 10 and make a bowl game. We are winning with walk ons in key spots just think if Bo had one of BC’s 4star guys then he would have skipped the corner and busted it up the alley all the way to the top. Please if you are expecting that quick fix then you are dillusional. This team has alot of holes to fill and looks like Texas may have given us a solid lb to help fill one of those. Hey HukerBrad how about a run down on Chris Williams and about Larry Assant how about we give him a shot at punter we seem to need a little help there oh thats right he still may need to make an open field tackle.
@Red. You are what your record says you are. This team is 4-3 and has yet to beat a quality opponent. I don’t believe in morale victories (and if you pay attention to Coach Pelini, neither does he). They are not 6-1, as much as we would all like them to be. Good teams find ways to win close games, not loose them.
@ed
You mean we are really 4-3? Your record does not say who you are. The Cards won the series and won 87 games. If they were what there record was that would mean they weren’t Champions. The Houston Rockets in 94 were 6th in the West and won the NBA Championship. New England was undefeated and a wild card NY Giants team beat them there record said 18-1 which was the best does that mean that New York is really not the champs. LSU last year won the BCS with two losses does that mean that we should give the trophy to USC or Kansas? A record does not reflect a on a season as clearly as you seem to think if a team slumps then gets hot there record may not be the indicator for who they are. By the way since Bo doesn’t believe in morale victories do you support his views or is he the wrong choice and and he luckily has this in common with you. Just wondering since you did tell us so about the mistake picking the head man. The world is not black and white sometimes you find the greatest clarity in the gray areas I believe that is where you will see the biggest signs of improvement from this team and staff
You are right, Chris Williams is a FREAK. He is very aggressive.
In a recent quote, he said ” I have to have a mental hatred for my opponent. I can respect them right up until I have to play against them. I KNOW on 3rd and 1 those guys on the other side of the line are NOT willing to give up on their body, what I am willing to give up on my body to STOP THEM.”
@Brad What did you think about his recognition skills they way he read plays and his ablitiy to finish. I know it was on the high school level but that is great instincts I just like his side to side speed and his headhunter mentality. May see the field next yesr.
I think he will make a great WLB. He does seem to have some very good, if not great, instincts. He does seem to be a little bit of a showboater, but it’s all in good fun. Say what you want about the high school level, but in Texas, 5A is the best of the best. I would almost bet that the worst team in Texas 5A could probably beat the best team in Nebraska Class A.
