Nebraska/New Mexico State - In Game Notes
[add your thoughts in the comments during the game]
I’m not liking the first drive jitters. But with a thin defense this will likely be a weekly ritual as they figure things out.
Option working well tonight…Touchdown Joe Ganz.
There shouldn’t be any complaints on the rush game tonight. Rocking and rolling against the 3-3-5.
Injuries taking their toll on defense. Lots of youngsters going to see some playing time from here on out. Inexperienced now, but the more they play, but this will build for the future.
Running game looking solid. Castille is lowering the boom on the defense with his rush attempts.
Lots of injuries tonight on both sides of ball. lots of hard hitting. Turned over on downs. Let’s go defense!
Halftime: Nebraska 21 - New Mexico State 0
Lots of rushing offense from the Huskers. Defense looking sound after starting the game a little tentative.
Start of the 3rd quarter coming up. It would a great day if Nebraska kept improving on Defense and held on to the shutout. Momentum booster going in to the Virginia Tech game in two weeks.
Lucky breaks a 60 yard rush. 1st and 10 at the NMS 17

Nebraska v. New Mexico State Score Predictions
Congratulations to Husker77 on his pick last week. His prediction was 18 points off the actual score and edged out The Count by 1 point. He will be receiving a copy of Jason Peter’s book: Hero of the Underground: A Memoir. (Husker77 - I’ll shoot you an email on Monday for delivery info)
I have another copy in play this week, so get your predictions in now. Everyone except Husker77 is eligible to win.
My official pick: Nebraska 49-17

You Play The Way You Practice
According to Steve Sipple of Lincoln Journal Star, our squad is playing the tougher team Monday through Friday, in effort to have few troubles come Saturday.
Nebraska apparently hasn’t backed off on hard hitting in practice since the start of the regular season (cue the Bill Callahan criticism).
“I’ll tell you what, this may have been the most physical practice of the year that we just had,” Husker offensive line coach Barney Cotton said right after Wednesday’s full-pad session at Memorial Stadium.
Why did Nebraska turn it up Wednesday?
“We wanted to play at full speed,” Cotton said. “We expect to be playing against another defense that, even though we don’t know for sure what they’ll do, we expect an awful lot of movement. And the only way to block movement is to block it fast.”

Their Play Says It All
New Mexico State cornerback Davon House talks a lot, but he doesn’t know much about the team he will face Saturday in Lincoln.
According to Omaha World Herald, House talked smack on Monday, saying the Aggies’ receivers “are like 10 times better than their receivers.”
Nebraska seniors Nate Swift and Todd Peterson declined to fire back. Peterson said opponents can say what they want to say.
“Obviously, I don’t like to hear that and I don’t appreciate that, but I’m not going to go out there and say something that they can go back and put on their billboard,” Peterson said.
Swift has caught 11 passes in two games this fall, staying on pace to break Johnny Rodgers’ career record of 143 receptions this fall. Swift is at 114 going in to Saturday’s game.
Peterson, who has seven catches for 93 yards, is closing in on 1,000 yards for his career and is positioned to end up among the school’s top 10 in receptions and touchdowns.
“Not only are they catching the ball and running good routes, but they’re blocking on the perimeter extremely well,” coach Bo Pelini said. “I can think of very few times the first two games _ only one instance _ where we missed a block on the perimeter that hurt us.”

Pending Bloodshed

I always enjoy reading the expert analysis of Nebraska State Paper’s Sam McKewon. Here’s how he sees things coming off Saturday’s game:
Truth is, well as NU’s defense has played at times, the Huskers face exactly one average offense for the rest of the season. One – Virginia Tech. The rest will be slightly above average, potent, or downright scary. Which means Nebraska defenders will bleed a little.
McKewon sees eight Ws for this squad and a bowl game. I’ve been more optimistic in my statements here, more of a fan, thinking ten wins is actually within reach. The fact is, no one knows, not the fans, the writers, nor the coaches.
It’s possible this team can step up and win in the Big 12 when it matters, which historically has meant against any team from Texas. I don’t know if it’s likely, but it needs to happen and it will happen. The only question is when.
I think it’s safe to say we’re going into the VA Tech game at 3-0. We beat the Hokies on the 27th and we face Mizzou with some decent momentum and an undefeated record to defend, to say nothing of honor lost.
