Smash Mouth Then, Smash Mouth Now, Smash Mouth Forever

Joel Mackovicka scoring against Akron in 1997
Lincoln Journal Star reminds us that Loserhan never once called a play for the fullback last year. I guarantee you that’s about to change. In fact, I wouldn’t be surprised if our first play against Western Michigan is a run up the gut.

I’m going to take the other side of that
ganz in the gun with 4 wide, slant pass

Sorry aaron, the fun ‘n gun doesn’t work in Nebraska in November with the wind howling and the snow flying. We have to get back to pounding people in the mouth and it starts with the fullback. Dane Todd was the best we had seen for several years and Callahan didn’t utilize him at all, it was sad. One of the best play call descriptions ever by Kent Pavelka was him describing Mackovicka’s running style; ‘He’s running like he’s angry at the ground!’ Classic Husker ball.

@ RD
Let’s not forget the classic Schlessinger runs that Kent called in the Orange bowl in 94′. I agree, we need to be more smashed mouth with the capability to throw when needed.

You gotta stop telling me I’m right all the time. Sometimes I am wrong!

RD-
sorry man but that excuse doesn’t work anymore. say what you want about the previous regime, but they did prove that a passing offense can be successful even in “november with the wind howling and the snow flying”. besides, over the last several years (from what a could remember anyway) november weather hasnt been that bad, december is the issue (like freezing my ass off in arrowhead in 06).
and just a comment for everyone in general, we all need to keep a perspective on the expectations of the offense. They probably will run more and have a versatile offense, however i dont believe you will see the offense look like it did 10 years ago for a long time, if ever. the days of 70-75 running plays and 10-15 pass plays are over, the team will be a lot more balanced. if im wrong ill admit it and feel free to tell me, just stating my opinion.
sorry for the rant but the last few people ive talked to face to face have all been stubborn and believe that power i and the “4 play playbook” are coming back in full swing. and one of them predicted at least 12 wins, a big 12 title, and a bcs win, if not a serious contender in the national title race. that guy needs to lay off the crack.

Wow, HB, you couldn’t be more off target. Way off base, I’m a little disapointed in you. (better?)
Aaron, you are probably right, I’m guessing the truth lies somehwere in the middle offensively. Pellini isn’t an idiot, there were alot of things about Callahan’s system that worked pretty well, there wouldn’t be any need to toss it completely out. But, I still think you have to be able to pound the ball, control the clock and set the pace of the game. We did none of that last year - the ’shootout’ with Ball State for example (unbef&*$inglieveable that one).
Twelve wins next year is a pipe dream, pure and simple. I look for around 8 wins (9 if we get some breaks along the way) a decent bowl bid, and we should have a better than average shot making the Big twelve title game. By the way Aaron; rants, tirades, outbursts and diatribes are always welcome!
