We’re Gonna Be A Contendah

AJ, the Husker Hater doesn’t think Nebraska will win the Big 12 North this fall.

I’m actually stunned that some of you simply brush off the fact that Tom Osborne destroyed your program (and yes..he did it by recommending Frank Solich and Steve Pederson…don’t kid yourself) 10 years ago…and yet some of you still fight back as if you actually have facts or recent history on your side.

I mean, it’s mind boggling to think that ANYONE who actually witnessed the events of last year can be so full of passion and confidence…..it simply defies logic and explanation. Just when I think you’re ready to settle into your new role as rebuilding underdogs…I see case after case of delirious fandom gone horribly wrong.

According to this ESPN poll, 78% of Nebraska residents do think a title is within reach. Where are you on this? Can we win our division?

We’ve got the talent — we know what the offense is capable of doing; we know there is talent on defense.

You got enthusiasm, you got a great motivator, you got talent, and the off season training is at a level that hasn’t been seen in probably 8-10 years. Last year we were an average defense away from winning the North (we didn’t even need a good defense, just something that represented defense). I don’t see a team on our schedule that we should not be able to beat this year. It’s not like Missouri has a great defense or unmatched talent on offense; it’s not like OU has a great offense; Kansas? (we’ll just call what happened last year a fluke); VA Tech? (this is a down year for them, not that they were even impressive last season).

AJ, don’t kid yourself. A Ganz run offense in the last 3 games of the season, was very high powered and one of the top in the nation. If we only had a defense that would keep the Ganz offense on the field longer, who knows what the possibilities would’ve been. Now we have a DEFENSE. I like the fact that this is how we’re perceived around the nation. It’s about time we put our money where our mouth is — Nothing excites me more. Go BO, GO HUSKERS!

Let’s not get ahead of ourselves here. I’d rather set reasonable expectations and have them happily exceeded rather than set them sky high and have them shattered. How do you actually know that we have a Defense? I have seen very few clues that point to a much improved squad. I actually think this may be one of Bo’s worst defensive coaching outings in his career. That is a testament to all that he has accomplished in his lifetime, and we should see some improvement, but I think we end up anywhere from 4th to 6th in the Big XII next year.

I don’t think anyone in their right mind is expecting miracles for Coach Pellini’s first year, nor do I think anyone reasonable is kidding themselves about how much work needs to be done. What NU fans are excited about is the fact that there is finally a sense of direction that has been missing for the past couple of years. A run at the North title is certainly within the realm of possibility, and would be a huge step in that direction.

By the way AJ, getting excited and pumped up about a team is what fans are SUPPOSED to do. What the hell is wrong with it?

I think it is possible. Let’s look at the schedule.

Western Michigan = WIN. This is a no brainer
San Jose St. = WIN. Easily overmatched
New Mexico State = WIN. 4-8 in 2007 with memorable win over Arkansas-Pine Bluff.

VA TECH= Possible WIN. No QB and all RB’s are either hurt or kicked off team.
MIZZOU= WIN. Last year was a fluke and in Lincoln this year Chase will be eating more than his boogers.
TEXAS TECH= LOSS. We just don’t have the DB’s to keep up with 60 passes a game. It’s gonna be a shootout which will favor Tech.
    IOWA STATE= WIN. Nuff said.
    BAYLOR= WIN. See Iowa State.
OKLAHOMA= TOSS UP. Pelini V. Stoops head 2 head. NU’s lack of depth could hurt NU at this point in the season, but if good things start to happen I give it to NU.
KANSAS= WIN. Last year was a fluke and with all your talent and coaches gone, get used to the cellar again.
KANSAS STATE= WIN. After 3 straight wins over the Kitties, I don’t see Prince having Pelini’s number if he couldn’t get Loserhan’s.
COLORADO= WIN. It won’t be a shootout this year, it’ll be a SHUTOUT! THIS AINT FLAG FOOTBALL, IT’S THE BIG 12 BABY!

So, I see it at worst we will be 9-3 with losses to Oklahomo, VA TECH, and Texas Tech.

Let’s not forget we were 10-3 with an incredibly horrible offense in 2003-04. Our offense will be much better this year with many more breakaway threats. Our defense will be much better than last year, but unfortunately we will not have depth. It we get injured this number could fall to 7-5.

    Just my 2 cents. :-)

Works for me Brad. By the way, can I assume ‘Oklahomo’ was just an amusing typo?
