Another Big (RED) Recruiting Weekend Update
According to Huskers Illustrated, a verbal jihad has ensued after this recruiting weekend. Twins Courtney and Steven Osborne have committed to being Huskers, as well as speedy receiver, Antonio Bell.
Bell had this to say about his time in Lincoln:
“It was everything - the coaches, the facilities and the people. The people knew everybody. A lot of people knew who I was. Like when I was in the mall, a couple of people walked by and told me I needed to come to Nebraska. I was surprised that they knew who I was.”
Cruz Barrett hosted his former teamate from Daytona Beach Mainland High in Florida and according to Bell, who was committed to Tennessee for some time, NU has the best facilities he has seen.
Both the Osbornes were impressed by Nebraska’s academics and support of it’s football program.
“I’m committed to Nebraska,” Courtney Osborne said. “It was everything – the school, the academics. That was probably my favorite part – my mom’s too. They already knew I wanted to come here, I just didn’t commit until this morning. Coach Pelini is a players’ coach,” Courtney said. “He was happy. He gave me a handshake.”
The Osbornes played their High School ball in a very competitive class in Texas. Their coach, Mickey Moss had this to say about them.
“Courtney, he’s a hitter, a striker, he’s a sure-tackler and he may be the fastest kid we had on defense. When it came to field speed, he blew everybody away. I think he could play multiple positions, but I think his strengths are defense. I mean he’s so aggressive and physical. He runs and tackles so well. Steven was determined this year that he’s going to be an incredible blocker. The thing about Steven is, he doesn’t go out to just get a block - he’s going out to destroy them. Every play he’s looking to hit somebody. I haven’t seen a receiver get so many pancakes before – I never have.”
Remember pancakes? I do and they were the glory years of NU dominance in the run game. I am ecstatic the Huskers got some much needed adrenaline shots in the arm for recruiting. With two guys from Texas and one from Florida, it will only open up some eyes in those states to Nebraska. NU now has eight players committed from Texas in this class. With the addition of Tim Beck (who is well known in the Lone Star state) combined with Shawn Watson and his Texas connections then you can only see where this staff is going to start out a full year of recruiting for 2008. Good times lie ahead my friends, soon the Huskers will RESTORE THE ORDER and take their place amongst the elite of college football. No team is looking forward to playing these Huskers next year, for under Pelini, they know what is about to hit them and it isn’t going to be pretty!

I still want Khiry Cooper, P.J. Smith, and Charles Mitchell! Oh, and watch the video on Steven Osborne. He’ 6′4 and runs like a gazelle! He’s also a great blocking reciever. He really reminds me of Mo Purify!

Already next year on scholarship we will have Will Henry, Chris Brooks, Niles Paul, Curenski Gilleylen, Menolik Holt, Todd Peterson, and Nate Swift. You add in Steven Osborne, Antonio Bell, and Khiry Cooper and that makes 10 scholarships out of 85 that are going to the WR position. This is just too many in my opinion and we should really focus on other areas of need, such as DT, LB and CB. They could however bring in Bell or Cooper as an athlete and move them around if needed.

@Brad
I think you have a good point in having too many recievers but to me Chris Brooks and Curenski Gilleylen dont really matter on account of they’ve never done anything. Also, I think both the Osbornes will switch to corner or safety and I dont know if Antonio Bell is that great. He reminds me of Nate Swift a little bit because he can play in the slot but I’m not jumping on his ship just yet. I’m just glad we got at least one WR in this class. A week ago I was worried we wouldnt get any and now we have the possibility of getting four. Running the style of offense that we do its always good to have a stable of recievers and I think having ten on scholarship will be just fine.
January 27th, 2008 at 9:45 pm
But Pete, I expect to see big things out of people you didn’t even know went to UNL. I think the previous staff played favorites and once you started you were in like flint. Chris Brooks was never given a chance, nor Will Henry and Gilleylen redshirted last year so who knows what he’ll be like. I don’t see someone moving to defense that did not play that position in HS. Osborned (Steven) only played offense. Bell, only offense. I am only saying it’s alarming. We should be 2 deep at 3 receiver spots and maybe have 2 more who can fill either spots. Eight in my mind is more than enough receivers.
January 29th, 2008 at 5:08 am
Eight is Enough. What a great classic T.V show.
Sticking with the number 8, that would be the number of day’s until we find out who all is coming on board. How many JuCo guy’s is Bo looking at this year? I find it interesting that when Billy C recruited his first year it seemed like we heard a lot about the JuCo guys he was bringing in. That doesn’t seem to be a big deal this year, which is fine with me. I don’t think they help you build for the future anyway.
January 29th, 2008 at 12:11 pm
I think Pelini knows he will have at least a 4 year window to turn things around. Why waste two of those years on a JUCO guy that will never really consider himself part of your program and will not have the dedication and loyalty that a 4/5 year guy will.

I see Steve Octavien is playing in the All Star game this weekend. Nothing like a big shot of ego for Texas when the game is called “Texas vs The Nation”
Here is the roster,

Jucos suck. Look what Andre Jones did (hmm lets remember he was a 5-star blue-chipper). What about Frantz Hardy. He was very very average with the exception of the Kansas State game this season. Myabe it was the coaching but really, the only Juco we had that was worth a damn was Mo Purify. And even with that said I thought he was very under-achieving this past season. We need to recruit high school kids no matter what. Anyone read the article in the Omaha Worl Herald about K-States recruiting? Something like 10 or more Jucos in their class this year. No wonder Prince has had no success with the Wildcats!
January 29th, 2008 at 8:04 pm
K-State has 16 Jucos right now, and let’s not forget Bowman. He is the only exception of this rule. He is the 1st and only member to take off his blackshirt. Everything I have heard about the way he handles himself is top notch. I am glad we took a chance on him.
I remember Andre Jones being on the Big Red Wrap Up recruiting special 2 years ago. Kevin Kugler asked him what kind of corner is he and he said “A Deion Sanders lock down style of corner, except I like to hit.” Those were his exact words. I was excited until the USC game when Steve Smith beat him repeatedly over and over and over and over and over and over and over again. Then, everyone else seemed to beat him after that. The only good play I ever did see him make was last year’s cotton bowl against Auburn when he blitzed and sacked the QB.
RP will not ever have success with K-State because let’s face it, it’s K-State. No one really wants to go there. No tradition, no fans, no facilities…. I could go on and on, but really, WHY?

what about zac taylor? he was a juco….
January 29th, 2008 at 8:56 pm
PJ SMITH quotes..on his visit to Arkansas..”I spent the most time with the coach who has been there for ten years. I can’t remember his name, but he’s from the previous staff. They said that I’d be a perfect fit for them and it would be a great opportunity for me. I’d have to work hard to play as a freshman, but that would be up to me.”
He can’t remember his NAME? He’s definitely “N”!!!
PJ Smith was then asked to rate his visits.
“Arkansas was a 9 1/2; Baylor was a 9 1/2; and Nebraska was a 10. I felt at home at all of them, but at Nebraska I felt a little more at home. I had a wonderful time at Nebraska, but I’m not going to base my decision solely on that.”
Yeah Right. I bet he remembered all of NU’s coaches!
He is for sure “N”!
January 29th, 2008 at 9:02 pm
Brian Thorson announced he will walk-on at NU. Thorson, a 6′3″ 275lb. product of Millard North visited NU this weekend and will see his time at either center or guard. He recently decommitted from Buffalo, which makes me feel badly for Turner and all the recruits he will lose to NU now that “THE MAN” is in charge.
@DT, you better get your bro to get me some free gear!!!
January 29th, 2008 at 9:14 pm
@arron, I don’t think all JuCo’s are a bad thing, we have had some good ones. I’m just glad to see that Bo isn’t going with the “If I grab a dozen JuCo’s I will have instant success” theory. I like the way he is planning for the future.
January 29th, 2008 at 10:02 pm
I think he is doing this because he knows that a freshman can come in and play on this team right away. No more waiting 3 years to learn the system crap!!
January 30th, 2008 at 8:08 am
I agree Pete, who needs them? Let’s face it if you are a top notch high school senior is your first choice really going to be a junior college? No way. JUCOs are for the most part HS players who have enough talent to play at the next level, just not good enough to garner serious scholorship offers. I’m not saying there aren’t exceptions or that there isn’t the occasional niche that a transfer player might be able to fill, but it’s certainly not a foundation to build on. I’d take our walk on program over K State’s - or any other school’s - transfer program any day.
January 30th, 2008 at 9:16 am
@RD
Alot of JUCOs are players who didn’t qualify academically out of HS also.
January 30th, 2008 at 9:34 am
That’s a good point.
January 30th, 2008 at 10:28 pm
Rivals just cracks me up. They are doing a break down of who they think will sign w/NU that have just visited. They have P.J. Smith as 50-50. I just wish they were taking comments on it because I would be like “no #h$t Dick Tracy, you’re a regular Einstein. Way to go out on a limb, there is always a 50-50 shot. Either he will or he won’t. Sounds 50/50 to me!” But, you can’t say that kind of thing on there without getting blacklisted. What a moron!!

@ Aaron
Yes, Zac Taylor was a juco but he still wasnt very “talented”. Lets face it, Zac really wasnt that good. If you were to compare him to Sam Keller and only look at “talent” then Sam Keller would beat him no doubt. Sam has the arm and the accuracy. He was way more “talented”. But there was one huge differance between the two. Sam was more talented but Zac was better. In my mind, Zac was the only JuCo we got that really loved Nebraska and everything it was about. He was loyal. He was a great leader, unlike Sam Keller. Zac was also able to do unbelievable things with what he could. Zac wasnt very talented but he was definately a much better QB. Right now, Zac isnt on an NFL roster because he isnt talented enough. The reason he had so much success at NU was because he was able to make the best out of what he had. Zac wasnt mobile, he wasnt always accurate, and his arm strenghth is nowhere near what it probably should have been but Zac always seemed to make plays. Zac was the only JuCo that Callahan ever recruited that had any loyalty to the program. For the most part I dont like recruiting JuCos but there are some exceptions; Zac was definately one of them. Talent isnt what made him great; loyalty and leadership is what propelled him. I know I’m not much for JuCos but I must say Zac was one of the greatest throwing quaterbacks Nebraska has ever seen, even if he doesnt have that much “talent”.
January 31st, 2008 at 9:02 pm
@ Pete
I think Zach Bowman showed more loyalty, heart, and knowledge of tradition with hanging up his blackshirt.
And do you really think Zach Taylor was one of the greatest throwing QB’s of all time for NU? What about “close my eyes and chuck it as far as I can” Joe Dailey? or “pitch the ball, NO I AM NOT PITCHING THE BALL” Jamal Lord? Those 2 have to be in the top 5!

pete-
on a light hearted note, read your post. half of it was to disprove the second sentence in your post
for some of the reasons you named, the ability to make plays, use the talent he had to the maximum of its ability and so on. I think zac, in my mind is a true husker. I think one thing that helped him when he came into the program is that by growing up in oklahoma and having a dad that was a former player for them helped him understand what it means to be a husker, and he knew this place. I really liked your post because it makes what i think is a very good point. id rather have the guy who can make plays than someone with all the physical tools. flynn from lsu didnt have all the physical tools and they won the title, todd reesing certianly doesnt have the “talent” others have and look what kansas did. playmakers get the wins not just talent.

Hey! It’s Friday!!!! If this article doesn’t get you jacked up and help you through your day, nothing will! God I’m glad Bo and his staff are here!!!!!!!!

@ Aaron
Your exactly right. Zac was and is still a true Husker.
@ Brad
Of course I did forget Jammal and Joe. Those two arent just in my Husker top 5…they’re in my top 5 college football players of all time!
Zach Bowman was good. In fact, before he got hurt he was great. Remember the Alamo bowl? He was awesome! Hanging up hs blackshirt was a great move by him and he is also a true husker. The only reason I dont put him on Zac Taylors level is because I dont know why he sat out the last three games of the season. He did something to truly piss off the coaches at NU. I dont know what he did but for some reason he stopped playing. I will not put him at Taylors level until I find out what he did.
February 1st, 2008 at 10:13 pm
He probably told crapgrove he was a moron for not playing more man 2 man like we did against Texas!!!.
Zach Taylor is now an Aggie
but I would be too if I was marrying the coaches daughter!!!
February 2nd, 2008 at 9:14 am
I hope thats what he did!
