Another Big (RED) Recruiting Weekend

prentisswaggner7_18200.jpgWith so little time left before signing day arrives on 2-06-08,  Nebraska is beginning to roll ahead at full steam when it comes to recruiting.  The newly assembled staff has been zig zagging this great nation of ours for some in-home visits and finally, this weekend, they become the hosts to several intriguing prospects.

Prentiss Waggner-  This guy has great speed and size.  6’2″ and runs a 4.45 ( rivals states 4.51, but he states 4.40) forty and has had 25 picks in his last 2 years.  Combine him with David Whitmore and we  have 2 really good lock down corners.

Baker Steinkuhler-  You know his lineage, and if you watched the Army All-American game, you saw him dominate the best of the best.  Offense or Defense, either way you are gonna win, but I would like to see him at DT which is probably our thinnest area of true talent.

Steven Osborne-  Tall and quick wide receiver out of Texas, who with twin brother Courtney, will probably be a package deal.  Steve is very versatile and shows some good quickness and moves in one of Texas’ toughest H.S. conferences.  Courtney is projected as an athlete, but looks like he was playing as a DB in school.  If you can watch this guys film, he gets downright violent sometimes.  Add on a little weight and we just cloned Ricky Thenarse, my favorite Husker.  Anyone remember the Bullocks Bros?  Marvin Sander’s teachings and Bo Pelini’s Defense is what made those guys NFL’ers.

Laron Byrd-  Another tall and speedy wide out, however at 6’4″ and 205 lbs., this guy could play right away with his 4.45 speed.  He has an upcoming visit to Miami right before signing day, so look for that to be when he makes his decision for his football future.

Also visiting are:  Kenny Stafford, NU commits Kyler Reed and Ricky Henry, Jordan Makovicka( Geez, what is in the water in Brainard, NE…I mean isn’t he like the 30th Makovicka to go to UNL in the last 15 years?), and Antonio Bell.  So far, Khiry Cooper is the only scheduled visit for February, but I expect that to change due to the fact this staff has brought in a lot of kids since the dead period.

Only two weeks to go, so should be exciting around these parts.  My wish is this class will stay intact all the way past signing day.  Over the last couple of years, during the last administration, our cupboards were raided on signing day by other schools looking to fill  their spots.  I just hope Bo can keep em’ from jumping ship.  Good Luck HUSKERS and GO BIG RED!

    All right ponder this Waggner and Whitmore at corners,
    Courtney Osborne at FS and pj Smith at Strong. Now come along a little further Compton at Mike Levronson at Sam and Whaley at will. You have one hell of a long back 7 with no one under 6’2 Match up problems all over the place for the offense. We have got some ballers on scholarship that will pave the way. Prince A, Rickey T, Latravius W, Major C, and I even see a better year for Asante. havok and chaos, only 200 or so days until we kick this off for real. Can not wait fellas.

    OK, I’m with you so far. But if Pellini goes with a ‘Tampa 2′, ‘cover 2′, or whatever the hell Noll called it when he came up with it at Pittsburgh, it relies heavily on pressure from a four man D line – because of the lack of blitzes in that scheme – do we have that atletecism on the line? (in case you couldn’t tell I have no idea how to spell atheletecism) I only ask because the former genious calling the D shots thought three down lineman were enough, clearly it wasn’t.

    I though some of our best stuff was when they put Grixby as the Nickel back and let him survey the field. They should of used him at safety, he liked to hit. I am pretty sure this defense will be alright next year…it can’t get any worse! No more read and react…it will be an all out BLITZKREIG on the field!!! I really think Rickey Thenarse will lead the team in INT’S. The dude just has a nose for the ball. I say we have an over/under on how many people get seriously hurt on the opposing team next year. I put it at 10. Rickey is good for that many by himself, if he doesn’t knock his own self out!

    Prentiss Waggner did not visit NU this weekend :-( Maybe he is waiting to come next weekend. I don’t get this one because he talked highly of Bo Pelini and how much he learned under his defensive camps at LSU. Maybe someone told him it was cold up here for 5 months out of the year. He is reportedly visiting Southern Miss right now. That’s too bad, maybe he caught wind of the OSBORNES coming to town!! ROCK ON!

    Prentiss Waggner announced he will not be visiting. I doubt he’ll go to NU.

    Wow we said the exact same thing at the exact same time Brad. We both said Prentiss Waggner won’t be visiting at 9:54 p.m. Wow thats a coincidence.

    It’s too bad because he has had, like I said, 25 picks in 2 years. I doubt he was playing Louisiana School for the Blind every game, so that stat is impressive!

    I don’t remember the guy’s name, but he was on The Zone today. He said it would be almost impossible for somebody to get Waggner out of the south. Sounded like it was always a long shot to get him up here.

    yeah, but this guy was just mediocre ( remember that word!!!) until after his sophomore year when he attended a defensive camp at LSU. A little one on one time with the PELINIMEISTER and BAM…..25 picks in 2 years and a for sure NFL hall of fame inductee. I’m not serious by the way…..well at least the H.O.F. bit.

    I think you owe each other a Coke.

    Personally, I’d rather have Dr. Pepper but Coke works just fine for me!

    Sounds like Waggner is going to be a Vol next year, not Husker. :(

    @RD

    How about this a front potter, suh, steinkuler,steinkuler. Steinkuhler was a beast on defense in the All-Star game, and I thought Ty was a stronger d-end then d-tackle. I think Potter was the most improved while Bo’s tutalage of Suh will make him the force we know he can be. Just because we play the cover two shell does not mean we will not pressure the Qb from various directions ie Zone blitzing, straight man overload blitzes, saftey and cornerback blitzes, zone/man weak, strong middle blitzes. Bo does not play the conventional tampa 2. it is an offchute. One of the key positions in any form of a tampa 2 or a cover 2 is an athletic mlb. That is what made will compton a must get. I think we will be suprised at the resurgence of the front four, but don’t get stuck calling this a Tampa 2, if you watched LSU,or Nu you saw it was a Hybrid that allows you to emphasize different positions depending on what knid of chaos and what kind of talent is at hand.

    @RTD

    Allright, let’s be fantasy coaches. Let’s try this: Thenarse and Asante at safeties, unless Culbert wants one of those jobs back (or Courtney Osbourne). Suh’s head over the ball, Steinkuhler(Ty), Potter and Turner or Sievers flanking him, unless Kreikemeier really is the second coming of Alberts, Murillo and the red shirt West on the corners, unless Levorson can take the job, Compton the mike, Whaley sam, and Dillard at will.

    It will be fun to watch this year’s newest hit….”Who want’s to be a Black Shirt?”

    @ HB
    He was coming off acl surgery last year, but if you insist, put Washington on the weak side, fast but no real experience. Then again we graduated all of our linebackers so who does?

    How come you don’t have Blake Lawrence(SP?) in there anywhere? I have a pretty good feeling he will be in the line up if he is healthy.

    Blake “white thunder” Lawrence is going to cause chaos. I was so pumped at the A&M game last year when he came in. He got hurt on the first play…..a play he made from across the field. Then, halftime comes and Loserhan starts calling the plays. About the only good thing at that game was “The Original” tunnel walk!!!
