The process: The Cornhuskers won’t be rebuilt overnight, after they suffered through one of the worst seasons in school history under former coach Bill Callahan. The Cornhuskers went 27-22 in Callahan’s four seasons, two of which ended in losing records, which previously hadn’t occurred at Nebraska since 1962. With the Cornhuskers’ struggling like never before, athletic director Steve Pederson — who hired Callahan and gave him a contract extension before the 2007 season — was fired in midseason. Former football coach Tom Osborne, who built the Cornhuskers into one of the sport’s greatest powers, was hired as interim athletic director. Osborne’s task was to evaluate the football program and decide Callahan’s future. Callahan was fired the day after Nebraska lost to Colorado 65-51 to finish the season at 5-7. Osborne interviewed LSU defensive coordinator Bo Pelini in Baton Rouge, La., the following day. Buffalo coach Turner Gill, a former Cornhuskers quarterback and assistant coach, also was interviewed. Osborne also spoke with Wake Forest coach Jim Grobe about the vacancy. The search was quickly narrowed to Pelini and Gill.
Grade: BThe hire: Pelini has the characteristics Osborne wanted in Nebraska’s next coach: he has a background in defense and understands the culture and expectations at Nebraska. Pelini worked one season as the Cornhuskers’ defensive coordinator under Frank Solich and was the team’s interim coach in the 2003 Alamo Bowl. He worked the last four years as LSU’s defensive coordinator and helped lead the Tigers to the Jan. 7 BCS National Championship Game.
Grade: CFinal analysis: Osborne might have worried too much about hiring a coach with Nebraska ties. A program like Nebraska should have been able to lure a proven head coach.
Overall grade: C+
I don’t necessarily disagree with the report card. I just hope espn and I are wrong.

RedTillDead you really need to be more sympathetic to Billie C and the Gang, Gosh they tried hard to do good things, and they were real nice people, kind courteous and such, didn’t no a lick about the Husker tradition or football for that matter, but Gee Whiz Golly Darn Diggity, I bet Fox Sports will run a nice retrospective on the tarnishing of an image and show those boys in the right light, I mean I see ED and Pete’s side there poor kids were made fun of, and weren’t picked for kickball and made to feel none to good because there pa’s couldn’t do there jobs, I mean cheese and rice those kids are scarred and whent they drive there Lincoln Navigator’s around they all look so sad, I mean I just about break up, but anyway you make sure to Give pete and Ed my love, cause they are such sensitive little Huskers and let RD know when that casseroles ready Pete, Ed and I will go with so we can Pick old Billie C’s brain about his excellent error at Nebraski

My former neighbor was making 6 or 7 figures a year as President of a software company and he lost his job. He now lives in a dumpy house and is probably making around 50,000 a year. His wife also divorced him and took the kids.
Bill might not have had that happen to him but he still lost his job. Has anyone here ever lost a job? Do you guys think maybe Billy C was humiliated? I am glad that Bill is gone because he sucked. He was stubborn and like DT said waaaaay to complicated. But its still a blow when you lose your job. We can all agree that Bill was a nice guy, cant we? He tried to his best but he ended up sucking. He lost his job because he deserved too. I feel bad for him. I hope he can get another job somewhere else and I wish him the best of luck. I dont care if you guys dont have enough in you to think about it but I do. I cant believe you guys arent even disappointed that this never worked out. I wouldve loved to see Callahan do awesome here. I wouldve rather had him win every game in his 4 years then be sitting here with a new coach. The bottom line is, Bill sucked so he was fired and I’m disappointed that he didnt flourish here at Nebraska.
None of your ranting and raving have even remotely changed my position. Just because I won’t celebrate someone loosing their job has no bearing on the fact that I believe it was the right move and needed to happen. Why is this such a hard concept to comprehend? Yet several of you read into that and suddenly I’m a Callahan supporter and not a true Husker Fan. Fact is, I’m more of a Husker fan than most of you. I care about those that were here, even if they lost too many games. I wish them all well.
Sorry, but I hated him from day one! And I don’t use “HATE” lightly. I’m glad it didn’t work out and I’m glad he ended up looking like the lieing piece of crap baboon that he is! He is lucky he got out of Oakland alive. I’m really surprised those fans didn’t tie him up and throw dart’s at him. If I saw him at a grocery store I sure as hell wouldn’t throw fruit at him! I would be chuck’n can’s of soup as hard as I could! Why feel sorry for his staff? I have never been any kind of football coach and I knew he was idiot, if they couldn’t see that, well then you deserve what you got! You all suck, I’m glad you got fired, now please go away and let the man that should have been our coach do his job and show you how to run a HUSKER football team the right way!!!!!

Utah is an 8 1/2 point favorite. I agree, I say Utah by 12. No Paul Johnson is worth an extra field goal for the Ute’s.

It always comes back to the almighty dollar! Callahan was paid market value and his contract was standard. Don’t blame him for playing the game. Blame the previous administation for making a bad hire. And before you ask, yes Steve (another good friend of min — sarcasm) should have been fired. He was an ass. However, I didn’t party when he was fired. At least I’m consistent.
