It’s DUCK Season…..And We BAGGED One!!!
NEBRASKA WINS 88-79!!!!!
On Saturday, Nebraska did what many thought was unthinkable. Play defense and Run and Gun. I never thought this game would be won by Nebraska the way Oregon kept hitting 3’s at will, but with Tenacious D (My Pick was Destiny!) and an all out effort from the entire squad, they prevailed. HOLY COW!! I simply cannot remember a more exciting basketball game in my life! The ups and downs of this one were a cardiologist’s nightmare with 10 lead changes and 5 ties. This is not to mention the huskers hot start to lead 9-0 only to have it vanish away in 3 minutes and trail 14-13. Everytime Nebraska would go on a run, Oregon would answer with hot 3 point shooting. Guard Malik Hairston was a perfect 5-5 from downtown and Tajuan Porter was 7-15. It seemed whenever they needed a three, they got it. None was more bigger than the one Porter sank with 9 seconds left on the clock. Down 74-71, Porter lofted one up from right of the key. He pulled a Reggie Miller and stuck his foot out to catch Strowbridge jumping past him. A foul was called and instantly in my mind I said ” well he has to make all 3″ and then the rainbow 3 went down. I can’t say what I said then. Porter, a 70% FT shooter went to the line and missed the shot. Nebraska put the ball in play and raced down the court much to my dismay. I thought a time out and a regroup would’ve been perfect in this situation. Let’s get a play in and hopefully an open look at the basket. But, just like in the Western Kentucky game, we made a bad decision and Harley took an off balanced shot at the key and put up brick off the backboard.
OVERTIME
I’m not gonna lie, Nebraska played with great heart all day long, but when everything was going Oregon’s way and overtime was forced I thought our chances of victory in a 5 minute shoot out were slim especially since Ade Dagunduro fouled out with 2 minutes left in regulation. However, unlike the WKU overtime, our boys jumped on them offensively and pressured Oregon into some difficult shots. Ryan Anderson played lights out in overtime. Hitting clutch free-throws and coming up big with a couple of steals. Nebraska held Oregon scoreless for 4 minutes of overtime and the Huskers iced it with free-throws down the stretch. Just thinking about it now I am still getting excited!
The Huskers led Oregon in almost every category with the only exception being rebounds. They finished the game with ONLY 7 turnovers compared with 20 assists for a 2.5-1 ratio (REDTILDEAD). To see the final box score, click here at huskers.com
I thought Ryan Anderson was the HUSKERZONE Player of the Game. His defense all game long was great with 4 steals. He finished with a season high 21 points, shot 60% from 3pt land and was a perfect 8-8 from the charity stripe. It just seemed whenever Nebraska needed a big 3, he hit it. Aleks Maric had the HUSKERZONE Play of the Game when with 30 seconds left HE HIT…. 2 clutch free throws to bring Nebraska’s lead to 74-71 forcing the Ducks to hit a 3 to tie in regulation. The rest is history and MAN what a GAME!!!
“First of all, I can’t say enough about this team as far as competing. They had a couple of chances when things didn’t go the way we’d like. This team hasn’t had very many opportunities, but at the same time, it hasn’t had a lot of great things happen for it. I thought for them just to continue to compete when maybe we missed some easy shots, maybe we missed some free throws when the game was tight, I think that shows a lot for the character of these guys not having a lot to draw from…….. With 20 seconds to go, I thought we did an excellent job of switching out on (sophomore guard Tajuan) Porter, but about the fifth time he went off the ball screen, we didn’t make the switch, and being the great player he is, he hit a 3. We were fortunate that he didn’t make the free throw and we got it into overtime. Saying that, I never thought, going into the game, that if it got this high-scoring, then I didn’t know if we could win it, because that’s what they like to do. But that shows you what I know.”
Doc Sadler
Oh, and one last thing. Since I am 2 for 2 on predictions, I would like to make a few more. National Championship for football within 3 years. I will hit the Powerball soon, and just for Ed and Count, peace in the Middle East.

Shhhhhhhhhhhhhh! be verrry verrrry quiet….heaeaeaeaeaeaae……
What a great game! Nebraska did exactly what they needed to do. Control the tempo with defense. And that’s exactly what happened. The reason it went into OT is the Ducks were lights out from 3 and the officiating was suspect. Despite that, the Huskers ruled the day!

I’ll have more to say later but I went to the game and the officiating was not suspect. it flat out blew chunks.

Ed and the Count agree on something? Hmmmm, let me see that map of the middle east again……….

By the way Brad, very nice call on this one: 78-63 NU (’Huskers pound the practice squad’). And the final was 88-79 NU. Well done, sir.

@RD
I don’t believe Count and I agreed on anything. I was at the game as well, and I don’t remember anyone throwing up

It’s a little strange seeing Nebraska Basketball on all the major sports outlet’s. That hasn’t happened in a while! I’m not really a huge basketball fan but listening to it on the radio with Kent doing the play by play, Hell I thought it was Nebraska-Miami all over again. That man can make anything exciting.
Nice win Huskers!

@Ed
Maybe it happened while you were down desperately trying to buy just two more Bud Lights before they shut sales at the arena off.

@HuskerBrad
Dude that crystal ball you wield is bordering on scary man. Nice call, Hopefully we step up in the big 12, and I think we will.

One thing I didn’t like was Oregon’s diss of Nebraska. It wasn’t ” they were just the better team today” it was ” we didn’t show up to play”. I think they showed up, they just got their butts whipped.

HB doesn’t need a crystal ball to be border line scary.
Did you guy’s hear the tweety bird fans (aka blue jay fans) talking smack about how they fill up the Quest better then the NU fans. Really? Are they that shallow that when they have nothing else to use they just start pulling crap out of thin air?
Lets not forget that there was about 5 inch’s of snow on the interstate that morning.

Listening to 1620 the Zone tonight on the drive home, they were talking about the differences between the two programs. Their question was, what program would be better if all things were equal. DUH! This is a no brainer. Not to mention the fact that Doc Sadler inherited one of the most boring offensive BB teams from Collier, but their was some disaray inside the ropes too. Players getting suspended, coming in overweight, not wanting to play in the system…and so on. Doc Sadler has done more for Nebraska Basketball in 1.2 years then DA will ever do at Creighton. I know….”but Dana has been to the Big Dance and has multiple Conference Championships HB”…yeah? You will see Nebraska’s success in less than 2 years under DS and there will be more of it in a much, much stronger conference. The fans will come back. Like I said, watching a BB game under the Collier regime was like going to the dentist without novicane and Doc is winning fans over left and right. If they served beer at the Devaney Center they would have larger crowds as well, but I see that changing soon. Doc Sadler is building for the future with McCray and Edwards redshirting. I hope we play Creighton more than 2 times next year with Roburt Sallie coming in and those 2 guys able to play. Be happy while you can Creighton fan, you will soon be getting hammered year in and year out! Don’t believe me? Check out what my magic 8 ball….uhhhh crystal ball says!!!

Comparing Creighton to a top notch Big XII team isn’t even worth the discussion. Creighton would be lucky to finish .500 in the Big XII. Right now the Huskers aren’t a top notch Big XII team, but I see that changing in the very near future.
By the way, Doc Sadler said it on 1620 last week. Creighton is not Nebraska’s rival. He is more concerned with the Big XII, and Creighton is a nice tune-up.

Creighton would finish better than .500 in the Big XII. Yes, they would be dominated by Texas, etc but they would do just fine against eveyone else. Hell, if they can beat Nebraska by 15 then they can beat any other Middle-Of-The-Pack team. I dont think The Jays would do too hot year in and year out but they would still be competitive. Altman is a great coach, he is much like Doc in many ways, and I think he would do better than you guys think. Plus, your comparing MVC to Big XII: Thats apples to oranges. If Creighton were a Big XII team then they would be a much bigger school with a lot more national attention. They would be recruiting higher-profile athletes. If that were all true then you would think the Jays would do just fine. Well, we’ll never know because CU will never be in the Big XII.

How about they replay that game now, Pete? Who ya think will win. Nebraska handed that game to Creighton at the Qwest. Next year it’s in Lincoln and it won’t even be close. I do think Pete brings up a nice point about Creighton being in the Big 12. They would get some better athletes but it’s all how you coach them. Could Pat Behrns coach football somewhere else and be successful? Dana Altman had his chance to be the coach of an SEC team loaded with talent. He chose not to go. I believe he felt out of his league and new the success he has had at Creighton would be hard to duplicate somewhere else. Or, maybe he just wanted his kids to grow up with an EDucation, I don’t know. He had his shot to go to a big time program and refused. Is Creighton that special, I ask you?
