Husker Mike is one of the more masterful writers on the Husker football beat, and I like what he has to say about Callahan and Cosgrove in the wake of yesterday’s big victory.
Some people might look at today’s 73-31 victory over Kansas State and ask just how Nebraska could fire Bill Callahan after a huge victory like this. They are missing the point. This team has been there all season long.
Bill Callahan and Kevin Cosgrove just didn’t realize where it was. 73 points from Nebraska isn’t redemption for Bill Callahan, but rather an indictment of him. As taught by Callahan, it takes years to master it. See Joe Dailey (sub-par in 2004), Zac Taylor (sub-par in 2005), Zac Taylor (Big XII offensive player of the year in 2006), Sam Keller, and now Joe Ganz. With only four years of eligibility, quarterbacks do not have the luxury of spending years to master Callahan’s system. The fact that the quarterback switch was forced by injury, and not by recognition by Callahan of the offense’s problems only magnifies the problem.
It’s simply more damning evidence that Bill Callahan isn’t the man to lead the Nebraska football program.
It’s funny too how BC told the team to play for themselves, since the coaches probably wouldn’t be around next year. It’s almost like he “just let go” and then, as fate would have it, everything clicked. It seems like a lesson we can all can benefit from.

Thank-you, couldn’t have said it better.

Who recruited Ganz. I had heard that Solich and Co. did?

According to his dad the Huskers teams of his youth recruited him.
“When he was a little kid, he watched them on TV a lot,” Mike said. “He just fell in love with them.”

Watching that game in person on Saturday was amazing. It left all of us in Huskerland…and if I hear anybody call it Husker Nation, I will puke in their face…with a HUGE sense of hope for next year. Joey Ganz can play and this team has some character to build on. We will once again have a bullseye on eye jersey when we go to Manhattan next year. That better be motivation to keep this moving in the right direction. Callahan is gone, we all know that, but this team is playing for their futures right now…and I love it!!! With the recent fall of Colorado, we have a great chance to go in to Boulder and come out with a “W.” I’ve never been more excited about making a bowl game than I am this year. GO BIG RED!!!

@KJ
What is the problem with HuskerNation?

@ Administrator
I think KJ has a problem with it because its a Steve Pederson thing.

Huskerland does work with Nebraskaland and Heartland better.

Maybe we should just rename Huskerland/HuskerNation to HuskerZone and end the discussion.

Yeah, Steve Pukerson came up with Husker Nation, so anything affiliated with that clown needs to be removed from our vocabulary. Huskerland isn’t bad, I like that. The next thing that needs to leave is this coaching staff. I can’t wait for Nov. 24!!! Bring on Bo!!!

In all fairness, I worked for a sporting goods store in Western Nebraska in the late 80s that sold a Husker Nation shirt.
SP probably stole it from there.

I for one am getting tired of the personal comments about the coaches. If I am not doing my job well, I get fired but I don’t get any character assasination along with it. Do any of you remember when Joe Paterno or Barry Switzer or even Tom Osborne had bad years? So maybe Bill isn’t ready to coach at this level. So what? neither am I or 99% of his critics. If you roast this coach too much, who will want to come here?

I do, and I also remember those coach’s taking the fallout from the loss. They stood in front of the media and took their shots, they took the blame, said they should have done a better job coaching and preparing.
Unlike our wonderful Billy Boy who blames the players for performing poorly when we lose, but yet when we win it’s because of his system and his development, we won because of his coaching!
In my opinion that’s why Billy is being burned at the stake. I don’t think this will affect the coaching search. I have yet to see a coach anywhere put the blame on the players like Billy does.
It’s almost judgement day!!!!!!
