Lincoln Journal Star delivered a stunning lead today: Nebraska hasn’t practiced in full pads since the latter stages of preseason training camp last month.

David at Fire Bill Callahan is one Cornhusker fan taken aback by this news.

I think Callahan is just trying to write this blog for me. It’s not at all hard to have a “Fire Bill Callahan” blog when he actually says, in public, on the record, that the team hasn’t been practicing in full pads since the season began. Then, earning every penny of his contract, he thought it might be a good idea to start doing that again today.

What?

I don’t even know what to say to that. I get that there are half-pad days, and helmet-only days, and walkthrough days, but to never — ever — strap on full pads and hit somebody for three weeks … even I’m astonished.

In related news, Corn Nation is publishing photos of the holes in our line.

Oh, I almost forgot. Nebraska defensive coordinator Kevin Cosgrove is bummin’.

“He’s hurt. He’s down,” Callahan said. “I tell him to keep his head up. He’s got my full support. He’ll do a great job this week as he hits the practice field . . . It just hurts. When you have a performance that you didn’t expect — that you never even think could happen — it hurts.”
