News out of Lincoln on Thursday…Sam Keller was cited by campus police for Disturbing the Peace. He allegedly yelled profanities at a woman who swiped his parking spot, and then threw a plastic cup at her vehicle.
Anyone who has attended just about any major university knows that lack of parking is the single biggest complaint. Obviously, we don’t condone that type of behavior, but for this to make the front page news at ESPN.com is a bit of a stretch. Must be a slow news days in college football land.
Keller’s court date is set for April 26.

Well I gotta ask this… Does anyone think he was demoted to second string QB at Arizona State for no reason?? Is anyone surpised at this? Does anyone care that he already has blown up on his new teammates?? Or, how about this, what kind of guy leaves his old teammates hanging and takes off after taking a drink of Bill and Steve’s snake oil? If you say it was to improve himself, why didn’t he compete for the first string job at ASU instead of crossing the country and competeing in a whole different program?? Let me say this again, there is a reason he was rejected at ASU, by coaches and his teammates. He didn’t start over to better himself, he probably started over BECAUSE HE HAD TOO. It isn’t the ‘miracle’ that you think it is , that Sam Keller is playing for the Huskers.
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again. Don’t judge Keller by what happened at ASU last summer. That program was a mess as evidenced by the train wreck it became early in the season. Keller was named the starter and two days later the decision was reversed after Rudy Carpenter threatened to leave the team. Now former-coach Dirk Koetter reversed his decision in an effort to keep the younger guy and basically lost control of his program at that point.
Keller has pro-level skills and barring injury or some complete breakdown in his play, will be first/second round draft pick next season. This is still true had he stayed at ASU and finished his final season on the bench.
Will he be a miracle? As in National Championship miracle, probably not. Will he run the offense, statistically-speaking, better than Taylor? Most likely.
ASU was a complete and total mess and the coaches and players there were not “together” on everything. Not only did they do very mediocre in 2006, theyve also fired their head coach. I wasnt surprised when he left the program. I was a little bit shocked when he came here but I was also very excited. This player has talent and I’m sure he will do better than Zac Taylor. He is an NFL type quarterback playing in an NFL type system. I agree with the Administrator. We might not win the big one but I’m sure with his arm leading our offense we will do much better than last year.
Thank you administrator. I have no problem ‘not judging’ Mr. Keller. All I am saying is, there is a reason why his teammates in ASU voted him off the team.
It is the same situation we have with Bill Callahan and the Oakland Raiders. There was a reason he was fired and the players revolted against him. Sure there were a few players that led the charge, as also in the case with Sam Keller. But keep this in mind, THERE WAS NO ONE WHO DISAGREED AND STUCK UP FOR THEM.
For what it is worth, Bill O’Reilly would call a lot of Husker fans Kool-Aid drinkers.
By the way, this isn’t meant to be disloyal or disrespectful. I would just like for some folks to come back to reality!! Admit what we gave up when Husker nation cannibalized itself and turned on it’s own loyal coaches and fans back at the end of 2002 for the sake of Steve’s experiment and ego trip.
And for Pete’s sake, (no offense to pete here) look where we are going and at what cost!! Are you simply content to ride this ‘experiment’ completely into the ground and take all of Nebraska with you??
Road rage in Lincoln? Come on.
Get us ten wins or more Keller and we’ll pull you around town in a chariot.
There used to be a time in Lincoln when men were men and knew how to treat women, whether they acted like women or not. I suppose that is all out the window now too with the Steve Pederson mentality?
Doesn’t anyone have any honor any more or is everything in life is WIN AT ALL COSTS?? IF only you (some fans) could step back and just take a look at the insanity!
So you care about WINS?? Well, do you care about HOW you get those wins? Don’t you care about what kind of men represent the Huskers? It just didn’t used to be this way. One would think you (some fans) have sold their soul to the devil, just to quench your lust for the coveted NC that the Huskers used to have at one time, with no desire to get it back honestly or with Honor.
bigredfred…
You say that the Husker nation “canabalized itself” in 2002 after turning on its coaches and loyal fans. BUT…Frank Solich and his staff werent going anywhere. Sure, we got ten wins every year, but we werent winning like Nebraska should be winning. We were mediocre. We “turned” on them because we werent going anywhere. Frank was fired after his 5th year. Now if Callahans program is the same way after his 5th year, then he will most likely be let go. SP will see that Callahan is winning but not winning in the way that Nebraska should be winning just like he saw with Frank.
Recently, Tubby Smith left the Kentucky basketball program. He left because he was going to most likely be fired for winning, but not winning in the “Kentucky Way”. They expect to be national title contenders every year just like Nebraska should be in football every year. Frank wasnt a national title contender every year. Thus, He was fired. Now you say that I am content with Bill Callahan. For now yes. Bill took a mediocre program and is building it up. Frank took an outstanding program and nearly drove it to the ground (even with ten wins a season)! There was a reason Frank was fired just like there was a reason that Bill was fired from Oakland. Hopefully after Bills 5th year with the Huskers he wont have to be fired. Hopefully we can turn it around this year and become national title contenders every year. We do care about wins and were only trying to get them (Oh and no offense taken)!
We’ve had rude, if not criminal, players for a long time. In fact, when Osborne brought in his thugs from New Jersey and Florida, we started putting rings on fingers. Surely, you recall that glorious time on the field (and trouble off) Big Red Fred. For the record, I’m not condoing Keller’s punk move, I’m making a joke of it.
Who remembers lawrence phillips? And what Sam did was way worse than constsant drug use and being kicked off the team (wink wink)! What He did wasnt so terrible…AND who would turn someone in for saying a naughty word to you and throughing a little plastic cup in your direction. It would be a waste of time! He isnt a bad guy and he most likely wont get kicked off the team like some of our former “thug” players. Im with Bugeater on this one.
How many times are you going to pull out the ‘Lawrence Phillips’ issue? You all know darn well how Tom Osborne agonized over what to do with him. What it boiled down to was, Tom tried to do what was right for Mr. Phillips. It never was a matter of, Lawrence, no matter what you do off the field, please deliver the team and “we will pull you around Lincoln in a chariot”.
It may be the right thing to look the other way when kids act like kids. Try to bring them around for the betterment of the individual and the team. But,what I hear you all saying is ‘who cares if Sam Keller doesn’t know how to be respectful to a female as long as he wins’.
I also hear you saying Frank wasn’t going anywhere, after he took us to the National Championship game and 2 division north titles. Frank finished 5 out of 6 years in the top 25, and YOU SAY HE WASN’T GOING ANYWHERE?? What have you been drinking?!?!
By the way, Bill’s record so far is 2 out of 3 years OUT OF THE TOP 25. Bill’s record so far is NO SEASONS WITH 10 WINS IN 3 YEARS. I think Frank only had 3 of those. Frank even had 10 wins in his rebuilding year after the one dismal season. THEN HE GETS FIRED FOR 10 WINS!!???
Yet you sit here and defend folks who have NO manners or class and have already been ran out of another part of the country for their lack of what it takes to make it in a class program. Bill AND Sam. Go figure. For some reason you still call yourselves Husker fans. Only in America. The Huskers USED to stand for something much more!!
I do not intend to question your loyalty to Nebraska, or your sincerity. I do scratch my head and question your judgement.
First of all, Lawrance Phillips is just an example. We arent making our argument over Sam Keller based on how his incident compares to those of Lawrence Phillips. We arent saying what Sam did was right but he is a Husker and I’m giving him the benefit of the doubt.
Now lets talk about Frank…First of all, the nationional championship that he took us to wasnt even deserved. We were blown out just like we knew we would be. We didnt deserve that game and you know it. The north was always bad and it still is. This is the same thing that happened in Kentucky basketball. Tubby was gonna get fired because he wasnt winning like he should be. Frank was not winning like he should have been. He wasnt recruiting well and he wasnt much of a motivator. He was no Tom Osbourne or Bob Devaney to put in small words. It was time for a change. Frank just wasnt fit to be the head coach at Nebraska.
You might not think Bill Callahan is fit for the job. For now, Bill isnt winning like Nebraska should be winning. If he keeps up, he’ll end up like Frank. He will be winning but not winning in the Nebraska way. I think that Bill deserves the same amount of time that Frank got unless we start to win and get back to being a national powerhouse! For now, Bill is on his way to becoming just like Frank, but it looks like he has another few years to change. Hopefully he does (I dont want to go through another rebuilding process or another 5 years of restocking)!
Well Pete you can have an opinion, but, you can’t argue facts. How many years did it take us to get the computerized BCS poll which combines the existing Coaches and Sports writers polls??? Since, Nebraska was put in the championship game by everyone in America, YOU say the Huskers didn ‘t deserve it?? You think 34-17 is being blown out? What a fan.
At least the Huskers didn’t MAKE UP a fictitious trophy and award it to THEMSELVES the way that STEVE And Bill did this year!!
In case you don’t remember , cause you must not have been around back then, when Nebraska won the big 12 north, and when they went to the NC game, there were close to half if not more, of the big 12 teams in the top 25. The big 12 was in the top 2 conferences in those days , not 5 or 6 where we are now. Clearly you have your facts skewed , at your own convenience I guess.
Youre saying the BCS is working? Well its not and it wasnt working in 2001. Why would we deserve to go to that game after the week before when we got DESTROYED by Colorado. We got absolutley killed and they still put us in the National Championship. The score wasnt a blow-out, but the way we played and the way things could have gone, we could and probably should have lost by more than 20! The Big 12 might have been more powerful then, but no one in the Country thought we should have been there but the computers. I was excited when we went but I had that feeling in the pit of my stomach that we would get killed: and we did. I dont know how you can say I’m not a fan by saying that we didnt deserve it. The facts arent skewed, were all fans here, and none of us are better fans than the others. The point is it was in the past and it doesnt matter. one last thing…wasnt this supposed to be on Sam Keller?
You are right, I did not intend to offend you. I respectfully apologize. I will settle for respectfully disagreeing with you sir and encourage you and everyone else to stand up for what you believe in.
Oh no I wasnt offended by any means. I was just saying my opinoin. But boy did we get side-tracked on this.
Bottom line is that many of our discussions and passionate debates center around one undeniable issue: Loserhan has put up 3 years of 5-average losses-per-season- that’s the worst performance for our beloved Huskers in 50 years. Plus he’s a true “hired gun” outsider who’s not rooted or loyal to Husker tradition, nor is he held to the same standards (the same “yardstick”) as true Huskers who always instilled the team with Husker character like Frank S. And because BC was brought here by an ego-driven, Fortune 500-thinking AD and now SP and BC are joined at the hip, true Husker football, tradition, class and integrity seemingly have gone out the window (maybe to Wall Street or Hollywood?). So as a result, true and dedicated fans like us and our families have been left with not only more losses than we ever thought possible (including ego-fabricated Big 12 North trophies when all the other teams in the North are little more than high school quality), but also an Athletic Department run by classless and clueless “anti-pillars” of the community that we can’t even look up to anymore. Therein lies a lot of our collective frustration, I believe. Poor quality performance and lack of quality leadership on the field, and even poorer quality AD and coach character off the field, appearing to be untrue and even apathetic to Husker tradition and Husker Nation.
[...] not just for him, but for everyone to reflect upon. Keller said several NFL teams asked him about an incident in March of 2007 in which he allegedly threw a paper cup at a woman’s car after she beat him to a parking spot on campus. Charges were eventually dropped. It’s almost [...]
