ESPN.com is reporting that Kenny Wilson broke his femur in a freak accident while moving a television and will miss the entire 2007 season.

What was once an excess of running backs suddenly became a depth chart nightmare. Pencil in Marlon Lucky as the #1 for now while Cody Glenn is still nursing the foot injury.

News out of Lincoln on Thursday…Sam Keller was cited by campus police for Disturbing the Peace. He allegedly yelled profanities at a woman who swiped his parking spot, and then threw a plastic cup at her vehicle.

Sam KellerAnyone who has attended just about any major university knows that lack of parking is the single biggest complaint. Obviously, we don’t condone that type of behavior, but for this to make the front page news at ESPN.com is a bit of a stretch. Must be a slow news days in college football land.

Keller’s court date is set for April 26.

Coach Callahan came to spring practice ready to talk numbers with the the press (reg. req.), his team and and the fans.

“If you look at where this offense has come from – 67th to 17th in scoring, from 96th in offense to 14th, from 107th to 23rd (rushing offense), passing offense from 81st to 54th to 23rd. The thing I’m most proud of is the (pass) efficiency of where this offense is at, 104th to 82nd to 13th. That’s huge progress.”

Those numbers, Callahan said, should help NU players believe they’re doing the right things heading into his fourth season. The high numbers for snaps and time of possession, he said, mean the system is providing the ball control it’s meant to provide.

“You can sell that to your football team,” he said. “You can sell consistency, you can sell the incremental improvement over the three years. It’s been a fast three years for me. Now we’re going into year four and I’m jacked up, because we’ve done a lot of good things.

“I’m just telling you that if you study it,” he said, “the numbers validate where you’re at.”

Naturally, there’s one more stat we’d all like to see. 11-2, 12-1, 13-0 and so on…

With the increased amount of commenting we’ve had lately, Bug Eater and I were talking about adding in a message board/forum.

What do you guys prefer? Would you used the message board or does keeping the conversation inline with comments the way things have been going work for you.

We see some upside to the message board in that it gives everyone a chance to contribute outside of our blog posts and the comments, but then again, there are also a few Husker message boards that already have large followings.

Help build a better Huskerzone.com and sound off in the comments. You also send any other improvement ideas/comments/criticisms to me directly by email at huskers {at} huskerzone {dot} com.

The Omaha World-Herald checks in on Harrison Beck, the QB sensation from Clearwater, FL who abruptly left the program last August amid rumors and unchecked speculation. From his comments, it sounds like he’s ready to play football again.

“I just had to change my outlook on everything,” Beck said. “When I was there, I don’t know what it was, what happened to me. It’s hard to explain. I just had to learn to enjoy playing football again and everything that comes with it.

“I’m a different dude now when it comes to football. I don’t know if something clicked in my head or a light turned on or what. I’m just in a better state of mind now.”

Beck is now preparing to compete for the starting QB postion at his new school—NC State.

The article points out that Beck can walk around Raleigh unnoticed, something he could not do in Lincoln. He’s quoted as saying, “[there is] no place in the country like Nebraska when it comes to football.”

The Daily Nebraskan is pissed.

Reprinted in the State Paper, the staff editorial blasts the football program for refusing to explain the recent dismissal of trainer Doak Ostergard after 23 years of service.

The Daily Nebraskan tried for days to get an interview with an Athletic Department official who could comment on Ostergard’s ouster or explain the department’s at-will employment policies. For the calls that were returned, the reporter was told that no one could comment on personnel decisions.

We would have liked to give Pederson and Callahan’s side of the story, but – yet again – they would rather ignore the media, not answer challenging questions and, therefore, deny Nebraska fans any information about how the Athletic Department actually works.

The piece concludes the program is more corporate than caring.

The Daily Nebraskan is published by the UNL Publications Board.
