Fire Bill Callahan - The 2006 Edition
If Internet traffic is any indication, it appears that the seeds of another Fire Bill Callahan movement are afoot. In the 48 hours since the loss to Oklahoma State, site traffic to Huskerzone.com - as driven by the search engines - has exploded, fueled by the search phrase “Fire Bill Callahan.”
We’ve started our own initiative, now referring to Bill CaLLLahan with red Ls in his last name, indicating the number of losses on the year.
As to the firing the coach? I think a better question for the fans is At what point do you become fed up with the program and your interest in Husker football starts to wane? My neighbor decided after Saturday’s loss that he is done as a season ticket holder and donor to the program. His biggest gripe, “the guy doesn’t show any emotion. For once I’d like to see his press conference after a loss and be pissed off. At least then I’d know he actually cared about the program.”
I feel a similar sentiment, if we have been recruiting these stellar athletes for the past three season, why aren’t they be developed to their potential. A coaching staff develops game plans and gets the most out of their players. Coaches all around college football are doing it with less ‘talent.’ This year - especially now that we’ve hit the final stretch - it seems as though the Huskers are stopping to catch their breath while better athletes keep on running.
I’m a lifelong Husker fan who gets to as many games as I can - although with a 2-week old and a 21 month old at home, I’ll be cutting back my in-person attendance for a while. My support is with the Huskers, but the coaching staff may be a different story.
What do you think? Please sound off in the Comments.

Cosgrove is a Tool
From the Omaha World Herald:
NU defensive coordinator Kevin Cosgrove said the Huskers were caught between wanting to double-cover Bowman and Woods and committing enough defenders to stop the run.
“You pick your poison,” Cosgrove said. “They just did a good job timing things.
“We talked about needing to dominate up front and needing to stay in a rhythm. When we got in that rhythm early, we were good. Then we got out of it, and could never get that back.”
Pick your poison? WTF. You don’t just pick your poison. This Nebraska team has the talent to stop anyone they face. The Huskers effectively shut down a multi-headed offense against Texas. Timing things? I guess if you call playing 10-12 yards off the their wide receivers at the line of scrimmage and continuously trying to strip the ball instead of tackling bad timing then I guess he might be right.
When you quit dominating up front, why didn’t you change things up? The Husker defense ran roughly the same defensive face the entire day.
Don’t even get me started on CaLLLahan’s comments…

Final: Oklahoma State 41 - Nebraska 29
No adjustments, no accountability, no ability to defend the pass. With the way Nebraska played the final three quarters today, a 6-6 season comes into the realm of possibility.
1 comment on an old post from Quentin in the minutes after the game went final might be foreshadowing a past theme: Fire Bill CaLLLahan.
“I think I speak on behalf of all true Husker fans when I say that Frank Solich and Bill Callahan have ruined our beloved Huskers.”

Aaaarrgghhh! So Close.
Final: Texas 22 - Nebraska 20.
Take away the second quarter and the Husker’s stuck it to the Longhorns.
This is also the first Callahan-era game I can remember where Nebraska actually made some half-time adjustments that worked.
Damn turnovers - all of them. Momentum killers.
Let’s hope there is a rematch because that will be a game to watch.

Go Big Red
Joseph Duarte of the Hoston Chronicle reminds readers in south Texas (and elsewhere thanks to the internets) that Nebraska hasn’t beaten a top-10 foe since Oklahoma in 2001.
It’s not every day a program as rich in tradition as Nebraska is in search of attention or validation. But the once-proud program, which became only the fourth Division I program to reach 800 wins last weekend, is only two years removed from a losing season and hasn’t won a conference title since 1999.
In other words, we need a big win on Saturday. Kicking the buffs’ butts last season was sweet. Beating Michigan in our bowl game was incredibly satisfying. But beating Texas on Saturday would far surpass either of these wins from last year.

Final: Nebraska 21 - Kansas State 3
Other than the fake field goal resulting in the opening touchdown, I thought Nebraska once again played another vanilla game. However, unlike the previous couple of games, you could tell the Huskers were in charge and while they only put 21 points on the board, they could have easily scored twice that many. With Texas coming up next week, I was happy to see a very solid win, some aggressiveness from the defensive line, and Taylor staying out of trouble (and away from possible injuries).
I’m still not sold on this defensive scheme we have going in the secondary. Our corners playing 10 yards off of the wide outs will get us blown out of the water against Texas. If a freshman QB can pick the Huskers apart for 10-15 yards at a time you need to wonder where they draw line.
I’ve got the game Tivo’d so I’ll give it another watch tomorrow.

Confidence Is Contagious
Jeffrey Martin, who covers K-State for The Wichita Eagle wrote a sweet piece in preparation for tomorrow’s matchup in Manhattan.
“It’s hard for a defense to prepare for us because we can come out four wide and throw the ball 50 times a game,” [Nebraska quarterback]Taylor said. “Or, we can use four tight ends with four different tailbacks and pound the ball 50-60 times a game. It’s tough for a defense to know what we’re going to do.”
In last week’s 28-14 victory against Iowa State, Nebraska ran 45 times for 251 yards. In a 39-32 overtime win against Kansas, Taylor threw 33 times for 395 yards.
This wasn’t possible a year ago. Often, it was one, usually the pass, and not the other.
Now, it’s impossible to tell.

Huskers’ Offensive Line Takes Care Of Business

Nebraska went Old School in Ames to pick up its first road win of the season. Cody Glenn rushed for 148 yards and two touchdowns, Brandon Jackson added 116 yards and a score and the Cornhuskers defense did the rest in a 28-14 victory over Iowa State on Saturday night.
Nebraska’s defense, which was lit up by Kansas for 574 yards a week ago, looked more like the Blackshirts of old Saturday. The Cornhuskers (5-1, 2-0 Big 12) held the Cyclones to just 53 yards rushing.
